AACPS Longitudinal Outcomes Project for Residency Programs
Date: Mon Aug 2 2010
This project is intended to provide outcome data regarding plastic surgery training to assist us determine what we are doing well and what needs to be improved. This data will aid in the creation of policy decisions that shape the future of plastic training. For individual programs, it will provide much of the data necessary to perform effective program evaluation and fulfill the ACGME requirement for this (PR V.C.) The data obtained will be: • Longitudinal – allowing the evaluation of results of changes made over time • National/Normative – allowing programs to compare themselves to other programs in multiple categories • Confidential, individual program data – allowing programs to evaluate themselves Data will be gathered from graduates at specific intervals after training, as well as annually from residents currently in training. The data covers all aspects of training and practice, both professional and personal. This data will be maintained in a confidential database by AACPS. Annually, residency programs will be provided a report summarizing the national data as well as data from their individual program. Data for this project will be entered into an online form. Graduates Programs will be responsible for contacting the appropriate graduates each year and providing them the link to the online questionnaire, as well as encouraging their participation. Graduates will enter their own data into the Graduate Questionnaire (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8VSTQ9G). Residents Programs will be responsible for distributing the AACPS Outcomes Survey Resident Information Form and having their residents complete a form for each year of their residency. The completed data should be returned to the program resident coordinator for data entry into the online questionnaire (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8VYSWRH). Initially, in order to obtain useful information we will need to enter several years’ data to populate the database, we are asking for the last five years of data. After this initial input of data it will require a modest amount of work for each program to enter annual updates. We anticipate the return will be well worth the effort. This project is the result of the input and effort of several individuals, with many years' combined experience in plastic surgery, graduate medical education, survey research and sociology. Nevertheless, as it is implemented, we are sure there will be some changes needed to improve the quality of the data and the process by which it is gathered. As we proceed, everyone who participates will have the opportunity to provide feedback. We recognize this is one more thing in a long list of "hoops" required and asked of training programs. However, this project has promise to provide data back to the programs that will allow them to better meet ACGME requirements, and with less overall effort. In this light, we believe it will be a worthwhile investment. If you have any questions, please contact Steve Kasten, MD at skasten@umich.edu Thank you in advance for your participation.
